A live panel discussion moderated by Ishay Govender, building on the talks by Xolisa Bangani, Jane Battersby, Angelo Fick and Mpumelelo Ncwadi. The panel discussion will focus on common issues across the Food and Culture theme, and how the topics indicate similar or divergent risks, opportunities and needs. Journalist, Founder of SA POC at the Table

Xolisa Bangani

Xolisa Bangani is the founder of a community project called Ikhaya Garden. The project was founded in 2013 in order to encourage young people to enjoy the adventure of gardening with a motto of making gardening cool.

Jane Battersby

Jane Battersby is Associate Professor at the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town, where she heads up the food security and food systems cluster. She serves on the Independent Expert Group of the Global Nutrition Report and regularly consults and advises local, provincial and national governments, NGOs and civil society groups on food issues in the African context.

Angelo Fick

Angelo Fick is the Director of Research at ASRI. For two decades he taught across a variety of disciplines in the Humanities and Applied Sciences in universities in South Africa and Europe. His research is informed by critical ‘race’ theory, feminism, colonial discourse theory, and post-structuralism.

Zayaan Khan

Zayaan Khan is a food activist, seed librarian and a community-driven leader. She holds a NDip landscape, a BTech horticulture and is working towards a Master’s in environmental humanities at the University of Cape Town.

Mpumelelo Ncwadi

Mpumelelo is a professional adaptive grazing instructor. He is an advocate for regenerative farming and meat from grass / veld raised livestock.
